When to Call Your Baby's Doctor
The following are reasons to call your baby's doctor:
- Rectal temp is 100.4 degrees F (38.0 degrees C) or higher.
- Your baby is vomiting.
- Your baby has diarrhea.
- Your baby does not want to eat.
- Your baby breathes fast (normal breathing rate is 40 to 60 breaths per minute).
- Your baby is suddenly more sleepy or more fussy than usual.
- You see redness, swelling or fluid on the baby's eyes, ears, nose, circumcision or umbilical cord (belly button).
- You see a rash you don't expect.
- Your baby's urine and stool output is less than expected.
- Your baby first develops jaundice or has worsening jaundice.
- You have any questions about your baby's health.
If you cannot reach your own doctor or clinic, call the emergency room at your local hospital. A doctor or nurse will talk with you and advise you what to do. If you think your baby needs emergency care, do not wait -- get emergency help.
